The County Manager's position is governed through Act 93-664, Act 99-325 and Act 2001-451 (A Constitutional Amendment approved through a countywide vote) along with the applicable job description.

The county manager is responsible for managing diverse departments and services: Juvenile Detention, Personnel Services, Finance & Accounting including Business Revenue, License Offices, Community Services, Facilities & General Services, Airport, Public Facilities, Water Services, Environmental Services, Development Services – Building Codes and Land/Development Regulations, IT Services, Proprietary (Water & Solid Waste Disposal) Finance & Accounting, Economic Development - Tourism - Promotional – Workforce Readiness Projects or Initiatives and the planning and construction of public facilities in collaboration with others.

About the County Manager 

Alex Dudchock serves as County Manager of Shelby County, Alabama. Mr.Dudchock began his public administration career with Shelby County in 1988. In 2019 his tenure as County Manager will be over 26 years with 30 total years of county service. Mr. Dudchock is responsible for the management and the delivery of diverse services. He focuses on consistently implementing and delivering timely services through conservative and sustainable budget management actions. He is responsible for the construction of facilities and infrastructure.

The following is an indication of some of the construction projects developed and implemented over the last twenty-five years: Multiple Courthouse Expansions, New Sheriff’s Operation Center and Adult Jail, Community Corrections Facility, Shelby West Corporate Park, Regional Juvenile Detention Facility, County Services Building in Pelham, Sheriff’s Training Center & Firing Range Complex, Animal Services Building, Shelby County Fire and Emergency Medical Training Complex, Columbiana and Inverness License Offices, Extension of Shelby County Airport Runway & Taxiway, New Airport Hangars and Terminal Building, New South Water Treatment Plant and over twenty Public Parks.

Mr. Dudchock is a native of Graysville, Alabama and received a B.S. degree from Auburn University. He has been in management positions in both the private and public sectors. He has lived in Shelby County since 1988. He serves on the Board of Directors for the United Way of Central Alabama, the Shelby County Chamber, the Birmingham Business Alliance, Alabama City County Management Association (ACCMA), and Chilton Shelby Mental Health. Mr. Dudchock is married (Natalie) and has three sons (Davis, Blake (deceased) and Russell). Past board service includes Shelby Emergency Assistance, Leadership Shelby County, Red Cross, Metropolitan Development Board, ClasTran, Greater Birmingham Regional Planning Commission, Shelby County Community Health Foundation, Shelby County Community Corrections Corporation and the Alabaster Medical Clinic Board.
