Role of Citizens
Participation
Public participation has been a central element in the development of Shelby County’s new Comprehensive Plan. The program was designed from the very beginning to solicit public opinion about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to our quality of life.

Nine Town Hall meetings were held in each county high school plus two makeup meetings. The comments received at these meetings were further refined at subsequent workshops and topic-oriented committees. For more information, see Paths to the Future, which details the public participation program developed for the plan.

County Planning Commission
Another important way for people to get involved in planning is through the county Planning Commission public hearing process. Anyone who has questions or comments regarding a proposed development project may attend the public hearing and provide testimony for the record, either for or against a proposal. The Planning Commission meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm.

The meeting agenda, case reports, and minutes from past meetings can be found online. For more information, see the Shelby County Planning Commission.
