In 1970 David Hockney and Petersburg Press released Six Fairy Tales, a compilation of 39 etchings and the texts of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s fairy tales, including: The Little Sea Hare, Fundevogel, Rapunzel, The Boy Who Left Home to Learn Fear, Old Rinkrank and Rumpelstilzchen.
Hockney had always loved Grimm’s Fairy Tales and had read all 220 of them. He also admired earlier illustrations to them by Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. In 1969 he decided to make his own images. Rather than illustrating the stories literally, he chose vivid images to encapsulate a mood or detail. He especially enjoyed the elements of magic in the tales, and his images focus on his imaginative response to the descriptions in the text rather than attempting to concentrate on the most important events in the narrative. They are more than simply illustrations: they stand on their own as images, independent of the stories.
Festival is a two-day annual event featuring live music, vendors, a children’s area and the festival’s signature attraction–the rubber duck race. Proceeds from the festival will continue to benefit local charities and service organizations.
Shelby Humane is the only open-admission animal shelter in Shelby County. We care for over 5,000 lost, homeless & unwanted pets each year.
We rely on fundraisers such as Paws for the Cause to perform our life-saving mission.
As we will be unable to host our annual Pumpkin Patch Express event, we have decided to create a BRAND NEW EVENT- starting the first weekend of October! Every Saturday & Sunday in October, you're invited to Scarecrow Junction - a unique, NEW community event at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera!
Scarecrow Junction will feature several scarecrows built or sponsored by a variety of hometown-proud local businesses, organizations, individuals and groups. Go on a scavenger hunt for these creative creations, enjoy food trucks, crafts, a goody bag, and not one – but TWO DIFFERENT railroads to ride!
Join us (appropriately distanced and masked, of course) for yummy treat bags and fun activities, and hang out with live owls, hawks, falcons, and our resident bald eagle, Shelby! We also don’t want you to miss our release of a rehabilitated owl back into the wild–a rare and exhilarating experience! Free after admission to Oak Mountain State Park ($5 for adults, $2 for children ages 4-11 and those 62 or older).
