NEW - Online State Driver License Renewal

The following licenses can be renewed or duplicated using this system:
• Driver's License• ID Card
- Licenses may only be renewed by this online application once every 8 years.- Driver's licenses are eligible to renew 60 days prior to expiration date.
- A valid credit card is required to use this application.- A non-refundable fee will be collected at the end of your transaction. If for any reason the transaction is not completed, your card will not be charged.
- Only renewals and duplicates can be performed online.- To change your address or to add or remove license classes, restrictions and endorsements, please see an examiner.
- You MUST have a printer available to print your 30 day temporary license.- Your new permanent license or ID card will be mailed in 7-10 days. A temporary receipt will be provided that is valid for 30 days.

“ShelbyChat” – Real time chat functionality for Shelby County citizens to interact directly with County licensing agents during business hours to provide information and answer questions eliminating phone calls and physical visits to the license office.

What Do I Need to Bring? – A collection of online interactive PDF checklists that can be downloaded that addresses detail information on topics from Boats to Vintage Vehicles. These checklists are designed to assist the citizens to ensure they bring the necessary documentation required on specific transactions.

“Tell Us How We Are Doing?" – An online survey to provide us with feedback regarding our license operations. Your comments are important to us. We are always striving to improve our quality of service and hope that by monitoring your feedback, we can improve our operations.

License FAQ Section – Six pages of FAQ’s covering topics such as Automobile Registration, Titles and Boats. Printable documents throughout the site to provide customers with the tools needed to complete their transaction correctly.

Vehicle Tax Education – A comprehensive breakdown of how to calculate Ad Valorem Tax for Vehicle Registration.

County/State License Functions – Operations of the Shelby County License department and the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) have been separated to distinguish the responsibility and authority of each entity.
