Chief Engineer - Development Services  

Mr. Gauntt serves as the Chief Engineer with the Shelby County Department of Development Services. Mr. Gauntt is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a BS and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering. 

Prior to joining Shelby County, Mr. Gauntt worked for the UAB Department of Civil Engineering as a research associate from 1997 to 2000 where he worked on numerous research projects. 

Mr. Gauntt began his career with Shelby County in 2000.While employed by Shelby County Mr. Gauntt has designed and managed the construction of numerous roadway, intersection, bridge and capital improvement projects.  He is responsible for the overall management of the Shelby County Regional Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Construction / Demolition (C/D) landfill operations, litter control operations, animal control and all capital projects. Capital projects include Federal, State and County funded projects.  Mr. Gauntt has worked closely with the Cities, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Boards of Education and private industry in Shelby County on projects of all types.

Mr. Gauntt is married to Frances Gauntt and they have one son, Fred Miller Gauntt IV.
