  1.  When is the deadline for registering to vote in Shelby County? Monday, Oct. 19 is the last day to register to vote in the November election. Click here to get registered to vote.

  3. What is the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot? Oct. 29 is the last date to apply for an absentee ballot in Shelby County.
  4. How do I request an absentee ballot? In order to vote absentee, a voter must complete an Absentee Ballot Application. A voter may obtain an Absentee Ballot Application in any of the following ways:

      • Visit the Shelby County Absentee Voting Office, located in the Shelby County Exhibition Center located at 86 Argo Road, Columbiana, Alabama 35051. Hours of Operation are 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m. Monday through Friday.

      THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT AN ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATION IS THE 5th CALENDAR DAY PRIOR TO THE ELECTION.

  5. What is the last day to deliver an absentee ballot? Nov. 2 is the last day to hand-deliver or postmark and absentee ballot for the general election.
  6. Where do I return an absentee ballot or application?Absentee Ballot Applications and Voted Absentee Ballots may be returned either in person by the person whose name appears on such materials OR by mail.

  10. What I.D. do I need to bring to the polls on Election Day? You need one of the following:
    • Alabama Driver’s License (not expired or has been expired less than 60 days)
    • Alabama Nondriver ID (not expired or has been expired less than 60 days)
    • Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Digital Nondriver ID,Alabama Photo Voter ID Card,state-issued ID (Alabama or any other state), such as AL Department of Corrections Release - Temporary ID (Photo Required), AL Movement/Booking Sheet from Prison/Jail System (Photo Required), Pistol Permit (Photo Required)
    • Driver’s License issued by another state, Federal-Issued ID, US passport, Employee ID from Federal Government, State of Alabama, County, Municipality, Board, or other entity of this state
    • Student or employee ID from a public or private college or university in the State of Alabama (including postgraduate technical or professional schools)
    • Military ID or tribal ID
  11. What hours are the polls open on Nov. 3? Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
  12. Am I eligible to vote in Alabama? You must be a United States Citizen, a resident in Alabama, at least 18 years old, not convicted of a disqualifying felony (or have had your rights restored), not legally declared mentally incompetent by a court
  13. What is a provisional vote in Alabama? A provisional ballot is the same as any other ballot except you must sign a legal document saying that you are eligible to vote and complete a voter information update form. If your name is not on the voters' list at your voting place, your provisional ballot will be counted if the Shelby County Board of Registrars is able to confirm after the election that you were eligible. Provisional ballots are counted a week after the election.
  14. I am disabled. Does Shelby County have plans in place to help me vote? Yes. Every Shelby County polling place has at least one handicapped voting machine. Also, if you are disabled or over 70 years old, you can move to the head of the voting line by notifying a voting official at the poll.
  15. Is campaigning allowed near the polling place on Election Day? Yes, as long as it is done at least 30 feet from the door of the building where voting is taking place and is allowed by the owner of the property if the precinct is on private property.
  16.  I have moved from one Alabama county to another since the last election. Am I registered to vote? No. Voter registration does not follow you from county to county. You must register in the county where you now live.
  17. Can I wear campaign buttons or shirts to the polling place? Yes you can, but you cannot loiter at the polls, leave printed campaign materials, or carry printed political information with you.
  18. Can I take photographs inside the polling place? Yes, but only of your own ballot. You cannot take any other photographs inside the polling place.
